'SIRENS' Song Review, by Andre Avanessian

Updated: Aug 9, 2023

It's a song that will leave you breathless, with its combination of power, emotion, and technical skill. If you're a fan of epic, bombastic metal that takes no prisoners, you most definitely won't want to miss this one.

Boasting crushing riffs, a soaring vocal performance, and a pounding sense of rhythmic momentum that only the metal genre can whisk up, ultra-melodic "Sirens" is a symphonic metal tour-de-force that most definitely means business. From the opening notes of the orchestral intro, "Sirens" establishes a strong sense of atmosphere that is all-enveloping and evokes a strong sense of both drama and tension that proves exhilarating and foreboding. The vocals enter with a particularly haunting quality yet bear a level of emotion and delicacy that is both alluring and supple in their expressiveness. The lyrics tell a tale of temptation and danger, one of the mythical sirens and their penchant for luring sailors to their untimely doom, drawing them inexorably in with their irresistible songs. As the metal instrumentation kicks in, the song takes on a wholly new dimension. The guitar riffs are thunderous, the drums pounding and precise, and the vocals operatic and powerful, soaring over the instrumentation like a sheer force of nature and pulling you into the song's fantastical world of mythological themes with ease, resulting in a listening experience that is both scintillating and fist-pumping.

With its blistering performances and high-octane sense of energy, the many distinct ideas of "Sirens" leap out at the listener with a level of immediacy and purpose that help draw you in instantly. This is very clearly a group of musicians with a deep-rooted level of chemistry between them and it most definitely shows in each and every lyrical phrase, delicately layered synth texture, blistering riff, and exciting lead break that's being conveyed to the listener. The attention to detail in the arrangement is particularly impressive and the level of dynamism that's been injected into it helps to not only ensure the track moves along with a fluid-like flow but ensures there's a great deal of contrast between its distinct sections. Such elements like guitar tone (palm-muted vs open-sounding sustained chords), inter-changing orchestral layering, vocal dynamics, and drum intensity all help contribute to making each section of the arrangement feel distinct and fresh, resulting in a continually rewarding listening experience that offers plenty in the way of melody, rhythmic variety, and timbral diversity. Overall, "Sirens" is a brilliant symphonic metaller that feels particularly grand in its scope. It's a song that will leave you breathless, with its combination of power, emotion, and technical skill. If you're a fan of epic, bombastic metal that takes no prisoners, you most definitely won't want to miss this one.
